Shepherd’s Mission
Discovering a new book should be a magical experience where the search is part of the fun. That is what we are creating. We give readers fun ways to find amazing books.
And I want to help authors meet more readers and sell more books. Authors face a massive battle to get their books in front of interested readers online. We want to make that easier.
Here is a longer breakdown about why I am building Shepherd.
When was Shepherd founded?
I started working on Shepherd in December 2020. I launched it publicly on April 19th, 2021. We are bootstrapped, and I am providing the funding out of my savings. My aim is to be financially sustainable by mid to late 2023 (business model and cost breakdown here).
How does it work for authors?
Authors pick their five favorite books around a topic, theme, or mood they are passionate about, along with why they recommend each of those books. Then, we feature the author and one of their books alongside that list forever. And we promote the author, their book, and their book-list throughout our website and marketing channels.
The topic, theme, or mood an author picks should be in the same area as their book. Then the readers who visit the book list will be equally interested in the author’s book. And by making book recommendations, the author shows readers their voice and personality, which gets them more interested in the author and their book (sales case study here).
Here is what a finished page looks like:
Brit Bennett: The best novels about the complexities of being Black in America
S.B. Divya: The best books for realistic near-future science fiction
Marc Morris: The best books on medieval Britain
Brian Hall: The best books about exploring the galaxy
This is totally free for authors, now and always.
